In February 2015, the Virginia State District Court had received more than 70,000 lawsuits against seven manufacturers of transvaginal mesh. Based on a Reuters report, more lawsuits are currently being filed with the court.
The judge in one case acknowledged American Medical Systems option to settle the claims with medical patients. The company, AMS, has announced their intention to resolve 20,000 filed claims and left open the possibility to settle other unfiled claims. The corporation had announced in 2014 they would use about 1.6 B dollars to settle their approximated 40,000 claims in total.
By February 2015, another manufacturer Coloplast A/S, had also settled many of the claims. The Danish company had received about 2,000 claims. In February 2015, Bard, Ethicon and Boston Medical stood by their devices maintaining that the vaginal mesh used in procedures was not been defective. Medtronic Plc’s Covidien unit now has agreed to settle a number of the claims against it. Greater than 11,000 female had declared damages up against the company.
